While in my creative writing class, a person whom I was to co-write a story with asked me a question on what do I like to read. The reason he asked me this is because he said that people write what they read, because they have an interest in that genre. However, when he asked this, I knew that what I read and what I write are completely different. I usually read horror, philosophy, and dramas. While on the other hand, I write usually in the genres of mystery, action/adventure, and fantasy. So I'm wondering, are you like me, someone who writes different from what you read, or do you write what you read?

I disagree with the person who told you that. Some people write in the style that they read, but I believe that most people write about what's around them.
I for one, read authors such as Ann Rice, and Sarah Monette, but I do NOT write about vampires, nor do I write psycological teasers. I enjoyed books from Lord of the Rings to The Da Vinci Code, but I do not write fantasy, nor do I write... In the style of Dan Brown.
So I am like you I guess.
But the point that I was trying to get was that, well, people dont have to write what they read. There are more influences than that in writing, such as large things, like life, to the small things, like sports...
(I personally try to write humor. It doesn't happen, as I am apparently not funny) X333

Well, I know I have this question on another forum and nearly all of the people write what they read. I'm just curious which will be the dominant thing to do.

Well... I find that slightly odd. I haven't ever had this question on another site, but most of what my friends and I do, is write about what we're involved in... (I'm the designated proof reader, so I know what they've written) I guess that seems a little odd to me... corious.

Well, I just recently asked this question on the Muse Bunny. So that might be the reason.

For the most part.. Yeah I write what I read, As much as I can anyways. MY favorite kind of book is Fantasy. A good author can create so much suspense when anything is possible. But I write Twisted / Violent Fantasy.. Not so much it becomes horror. Just a little Steven King'ish in style.. but In a magical world

I read Fantasy and Science Fiction and write the same but generally darker versions and I have a habit of killing people off and use lots of evil twists
